BELOIT, Wis. – The Illinois College women's soccer team fell to Beloit College by a score of 2-1 on Saturday afternoon. Ashley Sholmire scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season to send the match to the half all square at 1-1, but Beloit came back with the go-ahead goal after 10 minutes of the second half and the Lady Blues didn't have an equalizer in them. IC drops to 4-8-2 (1-4-1 Midwest Conference), while Beloit improves to 6-6-0 (3-3-0 MWC) with the victory.

The Buccaneers lived up to their nickname in the early going. Beloit was swashbuckling in the attack in the opening stages, scoring with less than three minutes gone on the foot of Sarah Farr to take a 1-0 lead. Beloit continued on the front foot throughout most of the first half, but the Lady Blues did begin to work their way into it and Sholmire caught the Buccaneers off guard with just over 30 minutes elapsed. The sophomore striker controlled the ball on the edge of the 18-yard box and sent a shot in towards Haylee Irwin that slipped through the goalkeeper's arms and in to tie the match at 1-1.

Illinois College kept up its strong play coming out of the halftime break but it was Beloit who made the breakthrough in the 56th minute. Candace Cunningham scored an unassisted goal to make it 2-1 and the Lady Blues failed to find the tying goal as the match progressed.

The Lady Blues ended the match with a 13-11 edge in shots, forcing Irwin into six saves in the match. Cat Solberg made five saves for Illinois College in front of goal. Sholmire ended with a match-high eight shots, four of which were on target. Ally Kjellander added three shots in the match, two of which forced saves.

Illinois College returns immediately to action tomorrow morning, playing at Lake Forest College at 11 a.m.
