JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – Despite a pair of wins from
Kathryn Ryan and
Jovanna Chavez in singles action, the Illinois College women's tennis team wrapped up its regular season with a 7-2 loss to Lawrence University on Sunday morning at the Bellatti Tennis Complex. The Lady Blues will go into next weekend's Midwest Conference Championships with a final record of 2-11 (1-8 MWC).
The Vikings took a 3-0 lead after doubles play, though Chavez and
Lisa Noggle were in the match at No. 2 until the very end. Lawrence was able to escape with an 8-6 win in that match to complete the sweep of the three doubles matches.
Lawrence clinched the win with victories at Nos. 5 and 6 singles. Senior
Brianna Pohlman gave it a good effort in the match at No. 5, but fell to Annie Harnicar 4-6, 1-6. Senior
Tamar Norville also put in a fight at No. 2 singles, fighting back in the second set against LU's Lilly Endsley before losing 1-6, 3-6.
The wins for Illinois College on the day came at No. 1 singles from Ryan and No. 4 singles from Chavez. Ryan was dominating at times in a 6-3, 6-1 win over LU's Katie Frankel. Chavez wore down Elana Lambert to earn a 7-5, 6-4 victory.
The Lady Blues will travel to Madison, Wis. next weekend for the two-day MWC Championships. Action will get underway from the Nielsen Tennis Center on Oct. 17 and conclude on Oct. 18.
