GALESBURG, Ill. – Spurred along by five wins in singles action, the Illinois College women's tennis team defeated Knox, 7-2, on Tuesday afternoon to get its first Midwest Conference victory of the season. The Lady Blues improve to 2-3 on the season and 1-3 in the MWC.
Beginning the afternoon with doubles, Illinois College took a 2-1 lead in the match thanks to wins at Nos. 2 and 3.
Audrey Brauer and
Jovanna Chavez won an 8-5 decision at No. 2, and
Brianna Pohlman and
Abby Martin also won, 8-5, at No. 3.
Moving into singles, Brauer swept her match without dropping a game in a 6-0, 6-0 demolition at No. 3. Chavez (6-0, 6-3) and Pohlman (6-1, 6-1) both had an easy time of it at Nos. 4 and 5, respectively. Towards the top of the singles ladder,
Lisa Noggle earned a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 2, while this week's MWC Performer of the Week
Tamar Norville dropped the first set to Knox's Taytem Chapman, but recovered for a 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 1.
Illinois College returns home tomorrow to face Millikin University at the Bellatti Tennis Complex beginning at 3 p.m.
