Box Score

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The Illinois College men's soccer team were unlucky to not get more out of the match than they did, but were able to settle for a 2-2 draw against Concordia University (Chicago) after escaping from a pair of deficits on the afternoon.

The scoring opened in the 20th minute for the visitors. Counterattacking down the right flank after a shot from Joe Tooley, the Cougars were the recipient of an own goal to take a 1-0 lead. A ball played into the middle of the box deflected off the leg of an IC defender and past goalkeeper Scott Workman for a 1-0 lead.

Denpota Furugaki had the answer in the 67th minute. Settling himself over the ball as it bounded through the box, Furugaki juked past a pair of Concordia defenders and put the ball into the upper right corner to knot the score at 1-1.

Just six minutes later, IC would trail again. Pedro Barrera found just enough space between the IC back line defenders to sneak in on a one-on-one and slide it in low past Workman to make it a 2-1 contest.

In the 76th minute, Ben Cochran put his name onto the scoresheet. Alex Gardner made a long throw-in from the left sideline that carried to the edge of the six-yard box. Cochran was able step in front of Concordia keeper Jorge Guzman and nod it backwards into the goal mouth to nab the equalizer.

IC peppered Guzman with shots in the sudden death overtime periods, but he was there to make four saves in the extra time.

For the match, IC outshot Concordia by a 19-8 margin. Furugaki and Brock Chartier led the Blueboys with four shots apiece. Workman made four saves on the afternoon.

Illinois College begins a five-match road trip starting on Friday afternoon. The Blueboys will play Spalding University in Louisville, Ky. beginning at 3 p.m. on Sept. 19.
