Cecil Brimmage ran for a season-high 273 yards to propel the Illinois College football team to a 26-6 win over Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin, on Saturday.
Brimmage averaged 9.4 yards per carry on 29 carries and scored on a 24-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
Michael Bates threw a pair of touchdown passes to
Kevin Fuller, and
Kurt Frischman returned an interception 75 yards for another score in the victory.
The start of the game was delayed 84 minutes by a lightning delay.
"It wasn't a pretty game. We made a lot of mistakes, but at the end of the game, we won," said Illinois College head football coach
Garrett Campbell. "I'm proud of our guys to go on two long road trips, play in our opponents' homecoming games, and leave town with victories. That's not easy."
The Blueboys scored on their first offensive possession Saturday, capping a 62-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown pass from Bates to Fuller. Frischman scored his touchdown late in the first quarter, to give the Blueboys a 13-0 lead, but Lawrence made it a one-possession game heading into halftime after Luke Barthelmess threw a 9[yard touchdown pass to Sam Wagner in the second quarter.
Brimmage's touchdown run and a 24-yard touchdown pass from Bates to Fuller, however, helped the Blueboys pull away.
Bates completed 14-of-25 passes for 195 yards.
Josh Gentile led the Blueboy receivers, hauling in five receptions for 77 yards.
Carter Cox led the IC defense with eight tackles, including two behind the line of scrimmage.
Andy Mills and Frischman snagged interceptions, while
Zack Hanlon and
Michael Ray tallied quarterback sacks for the Blueboys, who held their opponent to a season-low six points.
The Blueboys improved to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in Midwest Conference play with the win. They return home for their homecoming game against Lake Forest College next Saturday. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
