Missy Norville captured her third NCAA title on Saturday, winning the triple jump at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Claremont, California.
Norville jumped 41 feet, 3 1/4 inches to win the title. After fouling on her first attempt in the preliminary round, Norville steadily increased the length of her jumps before recording her event-winning jump on her sixth and final attempt.
“I didn't do anything very well this weekend, so it feels pretty good to come out and win (the triple jump),” she said. “I knew I needed to win this one.”
Norville completed an indoor-outdoor sweep of the triple jump with her win on Friday after also winning the triple jump at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in March. She won her first national title in the 55-meter hurdles at the NCAA Indoor Championships in 2011.
"It's funny because it was the exact same jump that I won indoor with," said Norville, who posted an identical winning mark of 41 feet, 3 1/4 inches to win the NCAA indoor title in March.
Norville also took third-place in the 100-meter hurdles on Friday, clocking a time of 14.02 seconds. She took fourth place in the long jump on Friday.
Norville said winning the triple jump was a good way to finish off both the weekend and the season.
"I didn't jump what I wanted to, but I won, and that makes you better," she said.
