February Focus: Shay (Bagent) McReynolds

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – February 7 marks the 32nd anniversary of National Girls & Women in Sports Day. In honor of that achievement, we have contacted past Doris B. Hopper Award winners and asked them to recount some of their past experiences in athletics and how playing sports has changed their lives. These profiles will run every weekday through the end of the month.

Our next profile is Shay (Bagent) McReynolds. McReynolds was the 1995 winner of the Doris B. Hopper Award and a 1995 graduate of Illinois College. She was a freshman on Illinois College's very first women's soccer team and went on to become a three-time All-MWC selection in her time with the Lady Blues.

Who was your female sports idol growing up?
Mia Hamm

How did you get started in athletics?
I started playing soccer at around 5 years old and fell in love.

How has athletics impacted your life?
My 10-year old daughter now plays travel soccer. I feel like I am able to help her more.

What was your most memorable moment as a student-athlete?
Winning the Doris B. Hopper award and playing on the first Women's Soccer team at Illinois College.
